BRAIS Projects Coordinator

The British Association for Islamic Studies (BRAIS) is looking for a Projects Coordinator to contribute to its mission of enhancing research and teaching about Islam and Muslim cultures and societies in UK higher education. The post would be ideal for a UK-based PhD student whose academic interests intersect with any aspect of Islamic Studies, broadly understood.

The post holder will play a key role in organising and delivering BRAIS's Annual Conference (usually hosted in April) as well as developing the Association's online profile and communications via the BRAIS website, social media channels and membership mailing list.

In addition, the post holder will provide administrative support to the monthly meetings of the BRAIS Executive, as well as to the BRAIS AGM.

This is a Guaranteed Hours post available from October 2021 for a period of one year, working a minimum of 250 hours over the fixed-term period. Hours of work will be discussed further at interview.

The post holder can be based anywhere in the UK. Work will be undertaken remotely, with meetings and catch-ups taking place online.

Main Responsibilities

  • Coordinate BRAIS's Annual Conference working closely with BRAIS Officers, Council Members and conference venue team (50%).
  • Oversee BRAIS's digital communications, including website, social media and mailing list, in consultation with BRAIS Communications Officer and BRAIS Secretary (20%).
  • Provide Administrative support to meetings of BRAIS Officers as well as the AGM (15%).
  • Undertake day-to-day administrative duties for BRAIS in consultation with BRAIS Secretary (15%).

Planning and Organising

The post holder will be expected to prioritise workload to fit project priorities and timelines, responding to unexpected events and challenges. The post holder will be expected to plan and prioritise multiple tasks in a proactive and flexible manner.

Problem Solving

The post holder may receive and respond to a wide range of inquiries and problems and will be expected to judge when it is appropriate to respond and when it would be best to refer requests to BRAIS Officers. The post holder will be required to provide solutions when unexpected changes or delays occur during planned activities, and will need to be able to suggest solutions and seek advice from BRAIS Officers when necessary.

Knowledge, Skills and Experience Required

Essential:

  • An understanding of the academic landscape of Islamic Studies in the UK.
  • Organisation and time management skills.
  • Experience of using social media effectively.
  • Ability to show initiative.
  • Excellent communication skills, with the ability to exchange information effectively with a variety of audiences.
  • Highly competent numeracy, literacy and IT skills.

Desirable:

  • Experience of events organisation, particularly conferences.
  • Experience of working within a university environment.
  • Experience delivering events and initiatives online.

Hours

The post holder will be guaranteed a minimum of 250 hours per year. Additional hours may be offered depending on the volume of work available.

Rate of Pay

The rate of pay will be £10 per hour. Payment will be made monthly.

The post holder can be based anywhere in UK. Work will be undertaken remotely, with meetings and catch-ups taking place online.
